Can tvOS 27 Turn Apple TV Into a Real Game Console?

The next big update for Apple TV is nearly here. According to recent reports, tvOS 27 will be unveiled at WWDC on June 8, and it might finally turn the streaming box into a legitimate gaming device.

A new chip is coming

The current Apple TV 4K still runs on the A15 Bionic from 2022. That changes this fall. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects a September 2026 hardware refresh with either an A17 Pro or A18 chip. This would bring hardware‑accelerated ray tracing and better support for Apple Intelligence.

Gaming is the real focus

The biggest missed opportunity has been gaming. 9to5Mac points out that tvOS 27 needs three things to fix that:
  • A dedicated Apple Games app on tvOS
  • Removal of the 4GB app size limit
  • Wider adoption of the Game Porting Toolkit
If Apple delivers on these, the new Apple TV could finally compete with consoles like the Xbox Series S.

Pricing and subscriptions in 2026

For those comparing streaming services, Apple TV+ remains $12.99 per month. The Apple One bundle starts at $19.95, including Music and iCloud. New users still get a 7‑day free trial, while new device buyers receive three months at no cost.

What to watch for

The hardware won’t look different, but the performance leap will be noticeable. WWDC kicks off on June 8. If tvOS 27 focuses on games, this could be the most important Apple TV update in years.
