GoPro skipped the Hero 14 Black last year, and plenty of people figured they were working on something bigger. Turns out, they were right. The Mission 1 Pro isn't just another iterative update—it's a ground-up new product line.
The Big Upgrade: A 1-Inch Sensor, Finally
The Mission 1 Pro's biggest story is that 50MP 1-inch sensor. Compared to the Hero 13 Black's 27MP 1/1.9-inch sensor, the gap is massive. Bigger sensor means better low-light performance, wider dynamic range, and noticeably more detail.
In real-world shooting, the difference is obvious. PetaPixel noted that GoPro even introduced a new GP-Log2 color profile for this camera—proof they're serious about the dynamic range gains. Tech Yahoo testers said it's the first GoPro they've used that can still deliver usable footage after sunset.
Video Specs: More Than Just Numbers
The Mission 1 Pro supports 8K 60fps and 4K 240fps recording. But the real standout is the 8K Open Gate mode—you can record in 4:3 using the full sensor and crop to landscape or portrait in post.
Slow-motion hits 960fps at 1080p. Engadget gave it an 8.7/10, calling it the best image quality you can get from an action camera. YouTuber Potato Jet described the 960fps slow-mo as "Phantom camera-level" quality packed into a pocket-sized body.
Real-World Experience: Not All Perfection
The good stuff first. Battery life is noticeably better—the new 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery gets you nearly two hours of 4K60 recording. Waterproof to 20 meters without a housing. The dual-screen setup is still here, with the front 1.4-inch display handy for vlog-style framing.
But there are trade-offs. It weighs 207 grams—about 50 grams more than the Hero 13 Black, and you feel it. **The $699 price** ($599 for subscribers) puts it nearly $300 above the DJI Osmo Action 6. Also, RAW photos are limited to wide-angle only, and processing is sluggish.
Gizmodo put it bluntly: the Mission 1 Pro delivers the best image quality of any action camera out there, but it's still a GoPro—not a cinema camera.
Who Should Buy It?
If you're a professional creator or a serious enthusiast who demands top-tier image quality, the Mission 1 Pro is worth every dollar. It packs near-pro performance into a compact body. But if you're just an occasional weekend warrior hitting the slopes or trails, the Hero 13 Black—or even DJI's offerings—might be the smarter call.
GoPro actually delivered this time. The 1-inch sensor plus 8K Open Gate pushes action cameras closer to filmmaking territory than ever before. It's expensive, sure. But great gear never comes cheap.
