The Shield TV (2019) Is Disappearing – Here’s What We Actually Know

If you've been shopping for an NVIDIA Shield TV lately, you've probably noticed something strange: the tube-shaped base model is nowhere to be found.

Over the past few days, reports have piled up from major tech outlets like XDA, Android Authority, and Yahoo Tech. Retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and Walmart have all sold out. B&H Photo now lists it as “discontinued,” while Best Buy marks it as “inactive”. Even NVIDIA's own website has stopped selling it directly.

What NVIDIA Actually Said

When Android Authority asked for comment, NVIDIA responded with this:

“The SHIELD TV base model is largely out of stock due to demand. We don’t have any updates to share regarding future availability at this time. SHIELD TV Pro remains available, and the SHIELD platform continues to be supported with ongoing updates for more than 10 years.”

Notice what they didn't say. They didn't confirm a discontinuation. But they also didn't promise it would ever come back. That's the kind of corporate language that usually means quiet retirement.

Why Now?

The timing makes sense when you look at the bigger picture. The Shield TV launched in 2019 – that's seven years ago. At $149, it was competing against newer, cheaper alternatives like the Google TV Streamer ($99) and the Onn 4K Pro ($59). The Pro model, at $199, offers more ports and better performance – and it's still in stock everywhere.

NVIDIA has also pointed to rising memory component costs as a factor. When margins get tight, the cheaper model is usually the first to go.

What This Means for You

If you already own a Shield TV: Don't panic. NVIDIA has confirmed that support and updates will continue. The most recent software update landed in February 2026 with January security patches.

If you were planning to buy one: Your only option now is the Shield TV Pro. It's available on Amazon, Best Buy, and other major retailers. Or, you can wait and see if NVIDIA has something new in the pipeline – rumors of a next-generation Shield have been swirling, though nothing is confirmed.

The Bottom Line

The base Shield TV isn't officially dead yet. But all signs point to it being quietly phased out. The Pro model remains the way forward for NVIDIA's streaming lineup. Whether that means a new Shield is coming or the Pro will simply carry the torch alone – we'll have to wait and see.
