For two decades, Google Earth has been the gold standard for verifying what’s real. Journalists use it to confirm conflict zones. Investigators rely on it to debunk hoaxes. Open-source intelligence researchers treat it as the baseline layer of truth.
Then, for about 24 hours, Google made it easy to turn that trust into a weapon.
The Tool That Lasted One Day
On July 30, Google rolled out a new feature integrating its Nano Banana 2 AI image generator directly into Google Earth. The idea was innocent enough: type a prompt, and the tool would generate custom images grounded in real satellite, aerial, and 3D imagery. Teachers could visualize ancient Pompeii. Architects could show clients what an empty lot might become.
But the internet had other plans.
Within hours, researchers and journalists discovered there were virtually no guardrails. BBC Verify generated a collapsed Eiffel Tower, a giant sinkhole swallowing the Great Pyramid of Giza, and Russian tanks in Kyiv. Open-source investigator Henk van Ess planted a nuclear power plant in Iran, a refugee camp on the US-Mexico border, and a bombed hospital in Gaza—all with a single sentence. Others created flooded versions of the US Capitol and fires at an Iranian oil terminal. One user even generated a giant golden statue of Donald Trump looming over the White House.
The message was clear: the tool didn't just allow creativity. It allowed anyone to fabricate geopolitical events with the credibility of Google Earth stamped on top.
What Van Ess said captured the danger perfectly: “The forgery does not have to look convincing on its own. It inherits the credibility of the map it was born on.”
The Pullback
On July 31, Google pulled the plug. In a statement, the company said it had seen “people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies” and was rolling back the feature “while we work on implementing stronger guardrails.”
Google clarified that generated images didn't appear in the main Google Earth experience and were watermarked as AI-generated. But that defense crumbled under scrutiny. BBC Verify found they could trick Gemini into saying fake Google Earth images were real. External AI detection tools also failed in some cases. The watermarks, it turned out, only worked reliably within Google's own ecosystem.
Why This Matters
Google Earth isn't just another app. It's a trusted one. Researchers use it to verify events in real-time. Journalists rely on it as a source of ground truth. By introducing an AI image generator, Google risked undermining the very trust that made the platform valuable.
As Henry Ajder, an AI-detection researcher, put it: “It's concerning because it's another place where sources of trusted information are being eroded by the constant doubt that AI might be involved.”
What's Next?
Google says the feature will return with stronger guardrails. But the episode raises a bigger question: Can any platform remain a trusted source of truth once it's been used to generate convincing fakes?
For now, the "create image" button is gone. But the lesson lingers. When a tool built for verification becomes a tool for deception—even briefly—the damage to trust isn't easily undone.
