For over three years, Garrison Robert Luttrell has been a familiar, anguished figure in the corridors of Dhaka's courts. The American citizen from Missouri is not a lawyer or a defendant in a conventional sense; he is a father fighting a relentless legal battle to see his son. His vigil outside the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, often holding a placard that simply reads, "Where is my son?", has become a symbol of a cross-border custody dispute that has spanned continents and strained judicial systems.
The saga began in 2016 when Luttrell met Bangladeshi national Farhana Karim in Missouri. They married in 2018, and their son, Fatmir, was born. The relationship, however, deteriorated. In June 2023, Farhana returned to Bangladesh with the child. Luttrell followed in October 2023, initiating a legal battle in the Dhaka Family Court that has since entangled the High Court and the Supreme Court.
While initial court directives allowed Luttrell visitation rights at the Uttara Club, he alleges these orders were consistently ignored. The situation escalated dramatically when Farhana allegedly went into hiding with the child, prompting the court to revoke her custody and issue a show-cause notice for violating bail conditions. Luttrell's legal counsel has painted a picture of a man being exhausted by a barrage of litigation, claiming Farhana's family filed numerous cases against him to drain his resources and prevent him from pursuing his son.
The case has now taken a new turn. Following Luttrell's public plea, Dhaka police have confirmed they are conducting an investigation to locate his son. During the probe, law enforcement discovered that Farhana Karim has allegedly remarried since returning to Bangladesh, adding another layer of complexity to an already fraught situation.
Luttrell, who has publicly expressed grave concerns for his son's safety and well-being, remains steadfast. "I only want my son’s rights to be protected under Bangladeshi law," he told reporters, a sentiment that underscores his unwavering determination to secure justice and the safe return of his child against overwhelming odds.
