Bangladesh Dismisses Ex-DMP Commissioner Harun, Six Other Officers for Desertion

The government has dismissed seven police officers, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, from service over prolonged unauthorized absence and misconduct.

Harun, a Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-rank officer and former chief of the Detective Branch (DB), had been absent from his post without permission since August 6, 2024. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued separate gazette notifications on Saturday, treating his absence as "desertion" under Rule 3(c) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.

Despite repeated attempts to contact him at his current and permanent addresses and via email, Harun did not return to work. A departmental case was filed against him on April 15, 2026. He ignored multiple show-cause notices and did not respond to the investigation report, which found the desertion charge proven beyond reasonable doubt. The Bangladesh Public Service Commission recommended his dismissal on October 1, and the President approved it on October 25.

The six other dismissed officers are former Additional DIG Shyamal Kumar Mukherjee, former DIG Md Anisur Rahman, former Assistant Commissioners Farhana Taskin and Md Moniruzzaman Sarkar, former Additional Superintendent of Police SM Jahangir Hasan, and former Lakshmipur SP Tarek Bin Rashid. Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Mizanur Rahman has been sent into compulsory retirement.

The disciplinary actions follow departmental inquiries and a directive from the Police Headquarters to crack down on officers who have remained abroad or absent without authorization for extended periods.
