Samsung is shaking up its foldable lineup this year. Instead of one Z Fold, we're getting two: the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Both are reportedly set for a July 22 unveiling at the London Galaxy Unpacked event.
The standard Fold 8 is the real news here – it's wider and shorter, with a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen and a 5.4-inch cover display. It weighs just 201 grams – lighter than an iPhone 17 Pro. The Ultra keeps the tall, narrow design we're used to, with an 8-inch inner panel.
Specs differ clearly:
| Specification | Fold 8 | Fold 8 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (fifth-gen) | Not specified |
| Cameras | 50MP main + 50MP ultrawide (no telephoto) | 200MP main + telephoto triple camera |
| Battery | 4800mAh | 5000mAh |
| Charging | 45W | 45W |
| Unfolded Thickness | 4.5mm | 4.1mm thin |
| Weight | Not specified | 215g |
| S Pen Support | Not specified | May be dropped |
Pricing hurts. Chip storage costs are pushing prices up: ~$1,800 for the base Fold 8, ~$2,100 for the Ultra. That's a noticeable hike over last year.
Crease? Mixed leaks – some say it's much better, but insider Ice Universe warns "not much improvement." We'll have to see hands-on.
Samsung is also launching two months before Apple's first foldable (rumored September). That's a clear power move.
Bottom line: two different approaches – one for new form-factor fans, one for power users. More choice, but your wallet will feel it.
