It was the kind of headline no one expected to read: "Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy stabbed to death." A Hollywood tragedy that, in a matter of hours, swept across news feeds from LA to London, leaving a flood of questions in its wake.
What happened that morning?
On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call on the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana, California. When they arrived, they found 81-year-old James Handy unconscious in the front yard, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Handy was pronounced dead.
A chilling confession
The 911 call that brought police to the scene was anything but routine. The caller told dispatchers, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin". When officers arrived, Michael Gledhill, 44, flagged them down and admitted he was the person they were looking for. Gledhill—the son of Handy's girlfriend—reportedly lived at the home with his mother. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and later formally charged with one count of murder with a special allegation of using a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $2 million.
Where the case stands now
Gledhill did not appear at his initial arraignment. His lawyer told the judge his client was "unable to assist" in his own defense, and a Superior Court judge ordered Gledhill to mental health court for psychological evaluation. A separate judge will later determine whether he is competent to stand trial. According to a friend of Handy's, the actor had casually mentioned in recent years that his girlfriend's son was dealing with mental health issues. If convicted, Gledhill faces up to 26 years to life in prison.
Who was James Handy?
Born in New York, Handy built a career spanning nearly five decades and more than 150 film and television credits. He was the ultimate character actor—the face you recognized even if you never knew his name.
Most recently, audiences saw him as Jimmy, the friendly bartender at the Hard Deck in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, a role that would turn out to be his final on-screen appearance. For an entire generation, though, he will always be the frantic exterminator in the 1995 classic Jumanji. Beyond those blockbusters, Handy quietly amassed an extraordinary list of credits: Logan, Arachnophobia, Unbreakable, The Rocketeer, and a staggering number of television series including NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Alias, Law & Order, The West Wing, Criminal Minds, and NCIS: Los Angeles.
"He was a hilarious man," longtime friend Jeff Hawks told the AP. Hawks recalled Handy belting out doo-wop songs whenever they'd go to bars. "I can't imagine who would ever have a beef with him. To me, it's impossible. He was just really a decent guy". His agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, described him simply: "I could not have asked for a more talented, humble or gracious client and friend".
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman summed up the collective grief: "This is not how anyone's life should end, stabbed in the chest and left dying in the front yard of a home".
