Tim Cook just dropped a bombshell in his final earnings call as Apple CEO: heavy Siri AI users might soon have to pay up.
After years of positioning Apple Intelligence as a free feature that comes with your device, Cook admitted the obvious – AI isn't cheap to run. “We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+,” he said.
In plain English? If you're the type who asks Siri AI everything, you'll likely need a pricier iCloud+ plan.
Why the change?
The math doesn't lie. Apple’s new Siri AI relies partly on Google Gemini models under a deal reportedly costing around $1 billion annually. Every cloud-based AI query costs Apple real money. And with iOS 27's AI features already carrying daily usage limits for free users, the writing was on the wall.
The company’s hybrid strategy – running simple tasks on-device while offloading complex ones to Google Cloud – is what Cook calls a “competitive weapon”. Apple’s capital spending on AI is a fraction of what rivals like Microsoft and Google are pouring in ($2.46 billion vs. their hundreds of billions). But even that lean approach has limits.
The precedent is already set
Apple has quietly been testing this model. AI features in the Home app already require a 2TB iCloud+ plan at $9.99/month. Photos tools like Clean Up and Image Playground have usage caps that iCloud+ subscribers can exceed. This isn't speculation – it's already happening.
What this means for you
For now, basic Siri AI, Writing Tools, and on-device features stay free. The paid tier is aimed at heavy users who burn through cloud compute.
Apple hasn't announced pricing or caps yet. But if you're already paying for iCloud+, you're probably fine. If you were hoping for unlimited free AI forever… well, that ship has sailed.
The free beta period is still your best window to test everything without limits. Enjoy it while it lasts – because the bill is coming.
