Former Military Pilot Who Filmed Sheikh Hasina’s Departure Found Dead in Turag River

The body of former Bangladesh Air Force Flight Lieutenant KM Tahsif Sauri was recovered from the Turag River on Wednesday afternoon, just a day after he was reported missing from his Uttara residence in the capital.

The 28-year-old was widely known for secretly recording and publishing the footage of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing Ganabhaban by helicopter on August 5, 2024.

According to police sources, a naval police team retrieved his body from the Rajabari river landing area under Uttarkhan Police Station, acting on a tip from the national emergency helpline 999. His identity was confirmed after his mobile phone and wristwatch were found with the body.

While drowning is initially suspected, the exact cause of death remains unclear pending an autopsy report at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

The circumstances surrounding his death have already sparked intense speculation. KSM Intisar Inzimam, a former coursemate at the Bangladesh Military Academy, noted in a Facebook post that while mud was visible on the hands, the rest of the body appeared clean. He stated that unless authorities clearly establish the death was an accident or resulted from a personal dispute, he would consider it a political killing.

Tahsif had reportedly faced various forms of defamation after the August 5 video surfaced, though no formal police case was ever filed against him. Law enforcement agencies have launched a full investigation into the incident.
