The Killer Robots Are Coming

The Washington Post recently ran a headline that sounds like it belongs in a sci-fi script: "Armed robots are on the horizon, as Silicon Valley pitches new military tech." But here's the thing—it's not fiction anymore.

The war in Ukraine has become the world's first robotics war. Ukrainian officials say drones are now responsible for roughly 70% of frontline casualties. And in a single month, Ukrainian forces executed over 7,000 robotic missions. That's not a prototype. That's a paradigm shift.

So who's building this stuff? Silicon Valley—the same place that gave us iPhones and food delivery apps.

The New Arms Race

Take Steven Simoni. He sold a payments company to DoorDash for $125 million. Now he runs Allen Control Systems, which makes an AI-powered autonomous machine gun called the "Bullfrog" that shoots drones out of the sky. His pitch? "The future is Skynet, basically."

He's not alone. Foundation Future Industries, a San Francisco startup founded in 2024, is developing a humanoid robot called Phantom that can carry mortars. They've reportedly secured $24 million in Pentagon contracts and tested prototypes in Ukraine. Overland AI—born out of a DARPA program—just announced a **$100 million funding round** to scale ground autonomy for the military.

Even the Trump family is involved. Eric Trump-backed FFI wants to deliver fully operational autonomous infantry units, with bipedal humanoid robots equipped with lethal capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is reorganizing its entire autonomy acquisition structure and investing $54 billion in autonomous warfare.

The Culture War Inside AI

But here's where it gets messy. Not everyone in Silicon Valley is on board.

Anthropic—the AI company behind Claude—refused to let its technology be used for fully autonomous weapons, arguing today's AI "are simply not reliable enough". The Pentagon's response? They formally designated Anthropic a "supply chain risk" and cut them off. The company is now suing.

OpenAI took the opposite path—agreeing to work with the military, but with strict limits. And at Google, more than 580 employees signed a letter urging CEO Sundar Pichai to refuse classified military AI work altogether. One engineer put it bluntly: "Agentic AI is particularly concerning... It's like giving away a very powerful tool at the same time as giving up on any kind of control on its usage."

The debate isn't academic. A top Pentagon official admitted he clashed with Anthropic's CEO, calling him out on social media for having a "God-complex". The question isn't whether machines will fight in wars. The question is who decides when they pull the trigger.

The Reality Check

Before we get too Terminator, here's the catch: the tech isn't there yet.

Army leaders acknowledge current autonomous systems remain limited in scope and reliability. One expert who's seen "pretty advanced Silicon Valley companies" working on ground autonomy put it simply: "And trust me, it's not impressive." Advanced autonomous capabilities are still three to five years out.

The Army is focusing first on combat engineering, logistics, and sustainment—missions that keep soldiers out of danger—rather than full-on killer robots.

But the trajectory is clear. Russia, China, and others are racing ahead. The U.S. military believes it can't afford to fall behind.

The only real question left: will we keep a human finger on the trigger—or hand it over to the machines?
