Microsoft Edge Confirms MV2 Deadline

Microsoft Edge is finally pulling the plug on Manifest V2 extensions, following Chrome’s footsteps. If you’re using uBlock Origin or any other MV2‑based ad‑blocker, your tool is on borrowed time.

Here’s the actual rollout schedule Microsoft confirmed this week:
  • August 2026 – Edge Canary, Dev, and Beta builds start disabling remaining MV2 extensions by default.
  • Later this year – The stable (release) channel follows suit.
  • End of 2026 – The phase‑out reaches all regular users.
  • Early 2027 – Enterprise customers get their own cut‑off date (so IT admins have a bit more breathing room).
Right now, the Edge add‑on store hosts only 58 MV2 extensions with meaningful user bases. Of those, just 3 haven’t published a public MV3 replacement yet. That’s not a huge number, but it includes the elephant in the room: uBlock Origin.

Why is uBlock Origin the big deal? Because MV3 limits how extensions can intercept and block network requests. The original uBlock Origin can’t be ported without losing its core power. The developer already made uBlock Origin Lite – it works, but it’s noticeably lighter on filters and dynamic blocking. For many power users, that’s a downgrade.

So what can you do?

  • Switch browsers – Firefox has no plans to drop MV2, and Brave ships with a built‑in ad‑blocker that doesn’t rely on extensions. Opera also said it’ll keep supporting existing MV2 add‑ons for now.
  • Stick with Edge for now – if you’re not a heavy filter‑tweaker, uBlock Origin Lite might be enough. Test it before the cut‑off.
  • Enterprise users – you have until early 2027, so use that window to audit internal extensions and push developers for MV3 updates.
Microsoft’s move isn’t surprising – they’re just matching Google’s playbook. But unlike Chrome, Edge is giving a slightly clearer timeline and a few extra months for businesses. The real loser is granular ad‑blocking, but the web’s moving on.

My take: If ad‑blocking is non‑negotiable for you, start testing alternatives today. Don’t wait for the pop‑up that says your favorite extension is disabled – by then, you’ll be scrambling.

Short, honest, and hopefully helpful. That’s the state of play as of August 2026.
